On Saturday 23rd January SACS held their annual regatta at Eikenhof Dam, Elgin. This schools rowing event pitches Bishops, Rondebosch, SACS, Somerset College, Peninsula Girls Rowing Club and the Western Cape Development crews against each other over a 2000m course.
In this first of three consecutive regattas to be held at Elgin, Bishops showed that they are the form boys school taking many medals in the U15 and U16 Divisions. Somerset College also dominated with their girls showing that hours put in on the water do convert to success. The newly formed crews from Western Cape Rowing showed that are starting to catch up on the more established rowing schools with several wins for both their boys and girls. SACS once again dominated the U19 age group with their Pair, Four and Eight having comprehensive victories which should set them up well for the upcoming National Regattas held next month. The regatta was accompanied by perfect weather with only a breath of wind, which has too frequently spoilt the racing in the Western Cape. However without a doubt the sport of rowing was the winner this weekend and its position as a thriving schools sport is well established once again. |
