Music Requirements

LESSON ATTENDANCE

  • The weekly lesson  register must be signed by teacher, pupil and parent
  • The time scheduled for each learner’s lesson is reserved for his exclusive use; rescheduling is not guaranteed
  • Please arrive promptly. Time will not be taken from the following lesson to accommodate late  arrivals.
  • Lessons missed due to unavoidable circumstances  will be made up when possible, on condition that the teacher has been informed about the absence
  • Please inform the teacher in advance as this will facilitate arranging an alternative lesson time

 

 

 

 

 

Please note that all available lesson times are guaranteed except those taken up by official school functions that take precedence over teaching.

 SACS music passport and Concerts

 · Passports need to be signed by teachers, parents and pupils on a weekly basis. This record of lesson attendance and practising will count towards the term’s marks.

  • All music students are expected to check the board daily  for notices
  • Attendance at ALL SACS music concerts is compulsory for all subject music pupils and extra-mural music pupils.
  • Lunch-hour concerts:  Two public  lunch hour concerts per term will be held in the Hofmeyr Hall.  Each student is required to play twice during the year.
  • A written review is required from each pupil for all SACS music events. These are compulsory assignments and are counted towards the term’s mark.
  • Parents, pupils and teachers need to sign the assignment form in their music diary after each event.
  • Students will be given the opportunity to participate in special events such as Jazz in the Garden, external exams, studio concerts , eisteddfods, outreach concerts, Concerto Festivals, Choir Festivals, etc.
  • These concerts provide goals, challenges and different arenas in which pupils can enjoy and develop their skills.
  • Full school uniform is always required for these events unless specified by the bandmaster or choir director.
  • Parents are asked to take a positive supportive role in motivating their sons to prepare and practice for these occasions.

 EXAM REQUIREMENTS

  • Subject Music pupils will need to present three pieces of varying styles for the mid-year exams and four for the end of year exams.
  • Extra-mural music pupils will be required to present  two pieces in  the mid-year exams and three at the end of the year.
  • The appropriate scales from a Royal Schools or Trinity syllabus will be examined.
  • Sight-reading and aural skills will be tested.
  • Timetables for these exams will be posted outside the band-room and on the notice-board in the music block. The onus is on the pupil to check these boards.
  • Accompanists are provided by the school and boys are expected to arrange regular rehearsal times with them.
  • Music must be submitted to the accompanist at least three weeks in advance of the exam or concert.
  • Four copies of each piece to be played has to be made for the examiners (Tip: do this as you get a new piece and save it in an exam file!)
  • You will be penalized for not being properly prepared in this regard for the exams.
  • Candidates need to arrive 15 minutes before their exam time.
