Arts and Culture

Each year at the Parents meetings I get the same questions posed “What is Arts and Culture and What does it cover/include?” – these questions are valid as many of us never had the opportunity to have specialized study in any of the Arts.

The move to the inclusion of a subject which focuses on Arts and Culture in general encourages learners to:

  • Change from being passive inheritors of culture to being fully active in its preservation and promotion
  • Be able to reflect, critically on art, performances and any cultural events.
  • Recognize the connections between works of art and culture.
  • Understand the geographical, economic, social and gendered contexts in which Arts and Culture emerge
  • Identify the links between cultural practice, power and cultural dominance
  • Analyse the effect of time on culture and arts
  • Understand how the arts express, extend and challenge culture in unique ways

From this we are able to draw on various activities and exercises which develop the pupil’s knowledge and skills base so that they become consumers and custodians of culture and arts. At a school such as SACS, this subject cannot be undermined. With over 180 years of culture and heritage, the boys at SACS will always have something to study within this subject. A specialized curriculum is currently being drawn up which will continue to promote this great school and its history and heritage.

Admittedly not everyone is artistic. The beauty of this subject is that everyone is included and with both the various practical and theory components, each individual has the opportunity to find something they will enjoy. Whether it be Art, Dance, Music or Drama, each boy is encouraged to do his best while learning along the way.

Each school has interpreted the Curriculum in their own way, which is good on the one hand, however it has made it difficult to standardize the subject as would be the case with many of the other content based subjects. This lack of standardization means that when boys come to SACS from other schools their knowledge and skills are varied. From Grade 8 there is a strong focus on equipping the boys with the basics and in Grade 9, the application thereof.

So in closing, the Arts and Culture subject develops the pupil in the following ways:

Arts and Culture develops:

  • The ability to make, recreate and invent meaning
  • The specific use of innovation, creativity and resourcefulness
  • Effective expression, communication and interaction between individuals and groups
  • A healthy expression of self, exploring individual and collective identities
  • A deepened understanding of our social and physical environment and our place within that environment; practical skills and different modes of thinking within the various forms of art and diverse culture
  • Career skills and income-generating opportunities that lead to enhanced social, economic and cultural life
  • Respect for human dignity
  • Insight into the aspirations and values of the nation and effective participation in the construction of a democratic society.

I am constantly changing the content and subject matter within this subject so as to maintain its dynamic nature. I welcome ideas and suggestions from the parent body and will try incorporate these if and where I can so as ensure the boys at SACS receive an Arts and Culture education like none other in the country.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if there is anything you wish to discuss or if you would like more information.
