Design and Technology

Design and Technology is a very exciting subject both to study and teach. It involves the pupils in designing in a practical context with particular focus on Materials, Electricity, Systems and Control, Textiles and Food technology.

At SACS we are not able to offer the boys a designated room for work on their various projects and this means that the boys are often given a design brief which they are able to work on independently, or within groups over an average period of 4 weeks. This ensures that they are able to come to class and ask any questions related to their project before it is handed in. Most projects are designed to get the boys to be sensitive to the world around them by requiring them to be resourceful with materials and in so doing promote recycling and sustainable development.

Another component to the subject is that of Drawings/ Communication. Many parents and pupils, who experienced a subject called Technical Drawing, will be familiar with the work focused on here. The boys are given 3D shapes in either Isometric or Oblique perspectives and are required to re-draw them in the opposite or Orthographic view. This is a very useful section for those amongst the boys who are considering a career in Architecture or Draughting.

Food Technology and Textiles is a very brief section where we look at food additives and means of preservation. As far as textiles is concerned, we look at how these have changed and developed from the humble cotton cloth to the hi-tech Gore-Tex and latest in thermal wear for example.

Overall there is an enthusiasm around the subject and I am glad the boys take so kindly to the subject. There is a lot of practical work but all this is based in an integrated and dynamic theory which the boys will put into practice over the two years of study.
