Review of the 2010 hockey season
The season started with the 1st team attending the King Edward VII Hockey Festival. They performed well at this “pre-season” festival, considering that our opponents had already played six league matches and were a month into the Gauteng hockey season. We drew three and lost two games, which is a good improvement on previous years. The team’s basic skills and playing structure proved to be significantly better than that of previous years and we looked forward with optimism to the forthcoming season. The 1st team played 20 matches, lost 8, drew 7 and won 5 (26 goals for and 35 against). The highlight was the 4-3 over WBHS in the last fixture.
The most successful team was the U14A’s (captained by Nicholas Price) who won 8 of their 12 matches and scored 36 goals). The coach, Mr James Peverley managed to extract the very best of each player and a good vibe existed in the team.
The 2nd team proved to be a strong force, also winning 8 of their 12 matches and scoring 34 goals. Mr Matthew Ash (coach) and Daniel Gildenhuys (captain) should be congratulated on the superb way in which they performed their respective roles. The exciting style of hockey played by the 2nd team entertained the spectators week after week.
In my opinion the U16C team was the most improved team of the season, thanks to the dedication and endless energy of their coach, Mr Mark Wilson. They were the third most successful team based on results.
Several SACS boys were selected to represent their province / zone. Lungelo Mafuya was selected for the U18 A- team and Chris Vlok for the B-team. At the completion of this tournament Lungelo was included in the SA U 17 national team. Michael Gildenhuys was selected for the U16B team. Five U14’s were selected for the Southern Zonal Team (Proteas) that participated at two upcountry festivals. Hassan Kahn, Bryn Lake, John Milligan, James Teversham and Nic Price did themselves proud by performing superbly. The Proteas were placed first in the zonal tournament at Grey College in June and were subsequently invited to an interprovincial festival in August. At this festival they played 6, won 5 & drew 1. A remarkable achievement considering that the Proteas team (comprising almost entirely of SACS and Wynberg Boys) beat Gauteng A and KZN A teams.
Senior players were honoured at a sports’ assembly in October.
The Robert Young floating trophy for the most improved senior hockey player was awarded to Alex Pierce. Christopher Vlok was awarded the Des Dyssell trophy for endeavor and contribution to senior hockey while Nicholas Brown received the Paul Johnstone memorial trophy for the 1st team player showing the best all-round ability and sportsmanship.
1st Team awards were handed to Matthew Grobler, Kyle Hanekom, Robin Welsh, Michael Hirsch, Karl Moss and Ross Caley.
Half Blues were given to Michael Nel and Gareth Schumann.
Full Blues were awarded to Nicholas Brown, Alex Pierce, Chris Vlok and Lungelo Mafuya.
A special thanks to the school boy umpires for their service to SACS hockey. Umpiring has afforded them a unique leadership opportunity and they have grown in confidence and ability. Tomas van Gysen achieved a Half Blues and Gareth Schumann & Nicholas Steenekamp were awarded service scrolls.
Finally, a word of thanks to all the coaches, umpires, first aiders, ground staff and supporters for making the 2010 hockey season successful and memorable.

U14C Hockey Report
8-0 Loss
On Saturday 16 April the SACS U14C’s played their first Hockey match against Fairmont High School in Durbanville.
Despite it being our first game and us having very little practice everyone played well and their hardest. Unfortunately the other team was more experienced and used their skills well. Sadly we lost but hopefully have learnt from our mistakes during our hockey game.
